Inspire and Achieve!

English Language Arts (ELA) grades 6-12 Field Test Information

Dear Parent/Guardian of Students in Grades 6-12:

We hope this letter finds you and your family well and looking forward to spring. The Sequim School District is also looking forward to your help and feedback in our process to adopt an English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum for grades 6-12.

The curriculum adoption process in our district is governed by Board Policy 2020 and the associated set of procedures known as 2020P. Both documents are available on the Sequim School District website. As per procedure, our Instructional Materials Committee has chosen two curricula to field test: Springboard and Expeditionary/Engage. Both curricula are aligned with the Washington State Learning Standards and have been used successfully in districts in our state and across the nation. Both curriculum series integrate technology into the fabric of the lessons and emphasize career and college readiness. You can find more information about Springboard at https://springboard.collegeboard.org/ and about Engage/Expeditionary at https://www.engageny.org/

As part of our adoption process, we are conducting a field test of these two curriculum products in grades 6-12 during the third quarter of this school year. We want to assure you that, even though we are field testing, all of the Washington State Learning Standards are being covered, and that we are preparing students for the Smarter Balanced Assessments beginning after spring break. The ELA departments in the middle school and the high school have made sure there will be no gaps for students as the field test proceeds.

We invite you to attend any of the parent and community feedback sessions scheduled below. We have worked to make sure the sessions are held in a variety of locations in the district, and that there are a variety of scheduled times as well.
